Protect Your Investment, Due Diligence Is Required |
Without a properly installed foundation base, an investment in a segmental retaining wall will be greatly jeopardized. The same is true for the backfill, geotextile, geo-grid and adhesives for a retaining wall application. Do not second-guess the extreme importance of completely understanding the following: soil conditions; site drainage; soil compaction; and the proper aggregate gradation requirements for the base and backfill. All of these factors will effect the overall performance. Spend as much time as possible to ensure the correct installation procedures are followed.

Informed Consumers Understand! |
To insure an investment in a sentimental paving application a consumer must understand the importance in the methods of a proper installation.
Understanding the correct gradation of the foundation base, as well as, bedding sand is crucial and will affect the overall performance. The same is true for the paving restraint, Geotextile, jointing sand and sealers.
Lastly, understand the soil conditions, site drainage, soil compaction and the importance for runoff away from existing buildings.

PAVE TECH
PAVE TECH adhesives are integral components for constructing proper retaining walls. When constructing a retaining wall, adhesives are used on the coping, corner units and various rows. Not only to ensure safety, adhesives greatly assist in the overall structural performance.
PAVE TECH adhesives are also utilized with paving materials to adhere pieces to concrete, wood, or one another.

RETAINING WALL APPLICATION
|
Base Materials
In the Metropolitan Grand Rapids area, "Chips & Dust" by Grand Rapids Gravel Company is an excellent product for constructing the foundation base.
If this product is unavailable, we recommended locating a gravel yard to find an aggregate base material in accordance to ASTM D 2940.
Backfill Materials
The aggregate recommended for retaining wall backfill is "5/8 Stone/Jenison Plant" from Grand Rapids Gravel Company. Coit Avenue Gravel Company produces a product named "6 AA" which is also acceptable as a retaining wall backfill.
Proper backfilling is vital to the retaining wall's strength. To ensure a proper installation the following instructions should be followed:
· As the wall is built, backfill every 12" of wall height.
·Backfill must be placed behind the wall in maximum lifts of 6" and compacted.
·No heavy compaction equipment should be allowed within 3' of the back of the wall. Only a hand-operated plate compactor should be utilized. |

Bedding Sand
The aggregate recommended for the bedding sand is coarse sand. In the Metropolitan Grand Rapids area, Grand Rapids Gravel Company and Coit Avenue Gravel Company produce a product called "#4 Sand" which meets the specification.
The purposes of bedding sand are the following:
· Allows water to drain quickly away from the pavement;
· Aids with leveling and cushioning the paving units;
· Adds strength to the overall foundation base.

Curv-Rite
Stable Edge™ by Curv-Rite Aluminum Edging plays a very crucial component in segmental paving, as the paver restraint. The purpose of installing an edge restraint is to prevent the horizontal movement of the pavers along the perimeter, maintaining the integrity of the paving system.

Geotextile and Geogrid Materials |
Geotextile & geogrid materials, often overlooked as
nonessential components, integrally play essential roles in constructing
proper paving and retaining wall systems. |
|
Typar®
Typar® Professional Landscape Fabric is a spunbonded polypropylene, with continuous filaments permanently bonded together for strength and durability. In both segmental retaining wall and paving systems, it acts as a soil separator or barrier. The fabric separates the "fines" in soils from the subgrade and prevents them from migrating upward into the 'foundation' base.
In soil which consists of mostly clay, this fabric is most crucial. Clay soil retains water which can act as a deterrent to the system resulting in reduced performance.

Strata Systems, Inc.
When does the category of a gravity retaining wall system change into a reinforced retaining wall system? The answer is when the height exceeds the manufacturer's specifications. It is most critically crucial to understand the manufacturer's height restrictions so to know when StrataGRID geogrids are a requirement.
StrataGRID geogrids reinforce soil with their high molecular weight and high tenacity polyester yarn. The yarns are precision knitted into a dimensionally stable network of apertures providing tensile reinforcement capacity in both principle directions.

Joint Sanding |
Sweeping sand into the joints of the pavers completes the interlocking effect. Jointing sand provides frictional resistance to vertical movement, as well as, aids in distributing the load placed on the surface. At Belden, we stock two different types of sands which are
a natural and a polymer-modified graded sand.
Natural jointing sand is acceptable for most applications, it is critical to prevent the jointing sand from being washed out of the joints. Sloped areas or areas around swimming pools, should have a polymer modified sand swept into the joints. Unlike regular sand, this sand resists insect infestation, weed growth and erosion caused by rain, frost, etc.. The polymer modified is ideal for stabilizing horizontal or sloped installations. This product allows some movement of the pavers without loss of jointing sand.

King Jointing Sand
King Jointing Sand is a natural sand which has the correct gratulation, as well as, has been washed and kiln dried. The sand has irregular shaped aggregates (causing it to 'lock'), which provide better stability and resist "wash-out".

QUIKRETE®
QUIKRETE® PowerLoc™ Jointing Sand is a blend
of fine sand and organic binders which is environmentally safe. Once this product is swept into the joints of the pavers, and dampened with a water mist, it hardens, locking pavers into place.
Product Use:
•Designed for commercial or homeowner applications.
•Resists weed growth and insects.
.•Resists erosion.
•Stabilizes pavers.
•Non-staining.
•Use for new paver installation or replacing existing joints.

QUIKRETE® PowerLoc™ Jointing Sand has inherited physical properties which when applied in an area that experiences shade for the majority of the day, the sand will harden at a much slower rate. The use of a 'Breathable' sealer (IE Prosoco Saltguard® WB) is highly recommended to be used in conjunction with this jointing sand. |
