DIY Thin Brick Wall

In theme with our most recent blog post, Hot Thin Brick Trends, we wanted to give a step-by-step tutorial on how to install your own thin brick wall as a fun winter project. While there are several methods to installing thin brick, we wanted to highlight the easiest installation method using a product called Speedy Mason. This simple method is perfect for beginner masonry DIYers!

Material Needed
For this project, you will need thin brick, mortar, Speedy Mason panel, grout bags and a dowel.

Step 1
The most fun part of the process – selecting material. Feel free to stop by any of our three showrooms and work with our knowledgeable sales staff to select the perfect thin brick for your project. We carry a wide variety of options, and our sales team will make it easy for you to narrow the options down. Bring in any inspiration photos, wood, and paint swatches you have to help facilitate the selection process.

Step 2
Once you have your material, begin to attach the Speedy Mason panel to your wall with screws and a drill. There are predrilled holes in the panel so it takes the guesswork out of the process.

Step 3
Remove the release liner on the Speedy Mason panel revealing the adhesive side of the panel. Then, wash the back of the brick.

Step 4
Place the thin brick directly on the Speedy Mason panel. The best part about this – you don’t have to mortar the back of the brick! The adhesive on the panel is sticky enough to hold the thin brick onto the wall, eliminating the need for mortaring the backs of the brick to stick them. The panel has a track system that makes it easy to keep the thin brick level and in line. Just pay attention to the space between the brick. Try to keep about 3/8” between each piece for pointing (grouting).

Step 5
Once the brick is adhered onto the panel, fill your grout bag up with pointing mortar for easy jointing. Then, fill in the joints carefully with the mortar.

Step 6
The mortar should be thumbprint set – where your thumbprint stays in the joint when pressed. Then, tool the joint according to your style preference.
